Uses current US Etsy fees: 6.5% transaction fee, 3% + $0.25 payment processing, $0.20 listing fee — charged on the price plus the shipping you charge. Rates checked Oct 29, 2026; always confirm against Etsy's own Fees & Payments Policy.

How Etsy fees actually work (in plain language)

When a buyer pays you, Etsy doesn't take one fee — it takes a small stack of them, and almost all of them are calculated on everything the buyer paid, including the shipping you charged. That's the part that quietly eats the profit on "free shipping" and cheap-shipping listings.

FeeRate (US)Charged on
Transaction fee6.5%Item price + shipping charged (+ gift wrap)
Payment processing3% + $0.25The whole order total. The $0.25 is per order, not per item — one more reason multi-item orders are worth more.
Listing fee$0.20Per unit sold (and every 4 months when a listing renews)
Regulatory operating fee0% in the USApplies in some other countries (up to ~2%) — non-US sellers, check your rate
Offsite Ads (only on ad sales)15% under $10k/yr (opt-out allowed) · 12% over $10k/yrOrder total, capped at $100 per order, only when the sale came through an offsite ad

The worked example

A $25 item with $5 shipping charged: the buyer pays $30. Etsy takes $1.95 (transaction) + $1.15 (processing) + $0.20 (listing) = $3.30 — 11% of the sale — before you've paid for a single material. If the item cost you $8 to make and the label cost $6, you keep $12.70. Sellers who only subtract "price minus materials" think they made $17. They made $12.70 — and that's before counting their own time.

Etsy fee questions, answered

Does Etsy charge fees on shipping?

Yes. Etsy's 6.5% transaction fee and the payment processing fee are both calculated on the item price plus the shipping you charge the buyer. If you charge $4.95 for shipping, that $4.95 is part of the fee base — charging for shipping does not avoid fees, it slightly increases them.

How much does Etsy take from a $25 sale?

For a $25 item with $5 shipping charged, the buyer pays $30 and standard US fees are $3.30: $1.95 transaction fee (6.5%), $1.15 payment processing (3% + $0.25) and the $0.20 listing fee. That is 11% of what the buyer paid, before your materials, packaging, shipping label and time.

What is Etsy's $0.20 listing fee and when do I pay it?

You pay $0.20 when an item is listed and again every four months when the listing renews. If a multi-quantity listing sells extra units, each additional unit costs another $0.20. When working out profit per sale, count one $0.20 listing fee per unit sold — that is what this calculator does.

What are Etsy Offsite Ads fees, and can I opt out?

If a sale comes from an Etsy Offsite Ad, Etsy adds 15% of the order total if your shop earned under $10,000 in the previous 365 days — at that level you can opt out in your shop settings. Shops over $10,000 pay 12% and cannot opt out. The fee is capped at $100 per order and stacks on top of the regular fees.

What price should I charge to make a 40% profit on Etsy?

Not simply your costs divided by 0.6. Your margin is measured against what the buyer pays (price plus shipping charged), and Etsy's percentage fees grow as your price grows, so the naive formula always undershoots. Example: a candle with $14.64 of materials, packaging, labour and label costs, sold with $4.95 shipping charged, needs a price of $24.92 — not $24.40 — to truly keep 40%. A fee-aware pricing tool works this out backwards for you; that's the core of TrueCost.
